Day 960 – Visiting Students in Shanghai

China Trip #3

I knew this particular trip would be special, but I didn’t think it would hit me the way it did.

“Thank you for remembering Harry. He is very happy to see you.  You are his first foreign teacher and first foreign friend.”

It was not all rainbows and unicorns.  I probably averaged 5 hours of sleep.  My first place was infested with mosquitoes.  I had problems exchanging money at the worst time.  I find China more difficult in regards to exchanging money in comparison to other countries.  I took a few domestic flights within China.  Moments before one of my flights, I had spicy noodles from the night before kick in.  It was awful!

“I don’t always read the parent feedback.  However, when I saw that he said some bad words during class, I watched the replay to find this part.  I really criticized him.  He tends to learn bad words by himself.  I don’t know why.”

Despite the issues I had periodically during this trip, it will be one that will be forever cemented in my heart.  I laughed, cried, and learned a lot.

“In Nanjing, the success rate to enter high school is 50%. 50% of students get into high school. The other 50% are considered failures. I am not sure why Nanjing has such strict educational policies. The competition here is crazy. Absolutely crazy. If you fail to enter high school, the window of opportunity closes.  There is very little opportunity for a second chance.”
